Beekeeping In Wales

About My Journey

Beekeeper By Van

Beekeeping first started in my family back in 1969 when my grandfather started beekeeping in his back garden with one or two hives as a hobby. My grandfather grew his hive numbers over the years and in 2014 I was invited to visit the hives along with my local primary school. This is where my experience with bees started.

I was invited to start beekeeping with my grandfather every sunday morning where we would visit the local association and then visit the apiaries straight after. At 11 years old, I was given my first hive. In early 2017 my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and suddenly passed away. At the time I had just turned 15 and with nobody else in the family that kept bees, I inherited all 30 hives. My dad was roped into starting beekeeping despite being petrified of bees.

This is where The Welsh Honey Company started. In 2025 we are still a family business with the same passion for our bees, Welsh honey and our amazing customers who make The Welsh Honey Company so special.

My Family Legacy

1969 The journey starts in 1969 when my grandfather, Mike Pett bought his first hive which was kept in his back garden.
1977 Over the 8 years of beekeeping, hive numbers grew. My grandfather now had enough honey to give away to friends and family
1998 My grandfather finally retired in 1998 and this is where hive numbers started to rapidly increase. There was now enough Welsh honey to start supplying shops across South Wales
2014 In 2014 I went to visit my grandfather along with my primary school. This was my first experience up close with the bees despite seeing them in the garden for years. I was given my first hive and I was paid a whopping £60 a year for helping out.
2017 My grandfather suddenly passed away in 2017 leaving me with all of his hives as nobody else in the family kept bees. I went from 3 to 35 hives overnight. My dad was roped into helping me even though he was petrified of bees.
2025 Since 2017 we have grown a reputation for supplying premium Welsh honey and caring for the environment. We now have our honey stocked in farm shops, deli's and butchers across the UK. We have also won Great Taste Award's on both Softset & Runny Honey Our full story is yet to be completed.
